Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Early 1971, post Mickey, pre Keith .

I listened to Ladies and Gentlemen in the past week. Love the sound they have then, yes sparse sound with fat sounding guitars is a great description. I had just listened to 4/28/71 today for a TDIH tribute on my day off. Pigpen had a good line in his rap during Hard to Handle. "I love you baby, like a wino loves his wine". I really laughed at that one, good old Pigpen. My observation is that later in the year, late summer, and then after Keith started, they seem to play with a bit more attack, or zest, to put it another way. Not really sure why I feel this way, but it is my instinct to say that.

In another add-on to this post, I haven't written here at the forum in a long time, but always here. I'm sort of celebrating recovering all my Grateful Dead collection from my Seagate 500GB external hard drive that has been playing up. I seem to think that it may be the jack, or the wiring, but originally I have thought something is wrong with the disk, the error was that it was not recognized or there was a malfunction of the hardware. Sometimes working, sometimes not. I bought a new - and much smaller 1 TB Samsung drive. I was able to get the faulty one to connect by standing it on it's end, very precariously on the mousepad, leaning against the monitor stand, but anytime I moved to lay it flat, it disconnected, so I left it in place. It took over 12 hours to copy everything, my wife was not amused, because with a small living room with a dog, 2 kids and normal weekend life doesn't usually "go" with Deadhead Dad protecting the computer desk from a slight bump for hours on end. Very happy and relieved it was all saved. And it was also cool to see the animation of the "I need more shows" sequel this weekend, it really went along with the tension around here and I got a good laugh.
